CITY TESTING FOR LEAD IN HOMES WITH
CHILDREN - The City of Tucson is using a $2.9
million federal grant
to help an estimated 180 low-income homeowners with children under 6 years old
abate lead paint hazards from their homes built before 1978. The grant comes
from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Office of Lead
Hazard Control and Healthy Homes. The City of Tucson Department of Housing and
Community Development (HCD) is working with a number of community partners during
the three-year program. The Arizona Department of Health Services (ADHS)
reports 70 percent of Tucson
is within high-risk zip codes where children should be screened for lead
poisoning. Arizona Public Media recently followed a contracted inspector using a
special X-ray fluorescence tool to test for lead buried in layers of paint. The
testing eliminates the need for scraping off paint samples and sending them to
a lab. You can hear the story by following the link below. From Arizona Public
